Episode 45. Underground Advances. Part 2. O Jogo Bonito.

Episode 45 of Freedom Flights is set in May 2025 and will be released in two parts, as I edit them. Some events foreshadowed in this episode will take a few months to play out, while others may be resolved in the next part.

A crucial point for some readers, football = soccer, not American Football, as you will realise, especially given my characters’ nationalities. As well. There are references to a key football scene in Freedom Flights: Episode 23 – Witches Troupe – Part 2, as it impacts events.

I have also made a POV change in this episode. I realised that almost all the modern Freedom Flights episodes are in a 3rd Person Omniscient POV, whereas the Night Witches origin story was written in a single 3rd Person Limited POV, and the Chayka Air creation chapters I’ve written each scene in a 3rd Person Limited POV. The latter is what I’ve attempted to use this time, with some male POVs for a change.

I will continue trying to foreshadow future incidents without making my characters react as if they know what will happen later in 2025… although they might fear what could happen. Also, I want each episode to focus on just a few RL incidents from a specific month, along with character and squadron development.

Therefore, until a just and lasting peace for Ukraine is reached and rebuilding begins, I will continue to write more episodes. Perhaps after that, I can finish writing the pre-2022 growth of the  Chayka Family and Chayka Air, their aviation business based in Canada.

We must never forget the brave people fighting for freedom, with too many losing their lives. Let’s pray Western aid and weapons continue to reach Ukraine, despite unexpected interruptions. Assistance must arrive on time to change their fortunes and prepare for the genuine peace that must come soon.

Episode 45. Underground Advances. Part 2. O Jogo Bonito.

2025

Wednesday, May 7th –  Arena, Chayka Field, Volyn Oblast, Ukraine

Dmytro Kovalchuk had woken briefly to register the naked blonde slipping out of the bed. Now, she was flat on her back, a bare leg stretching against a crutch. Nearby, her prosthetic leg was lying safely on a bench.

β€œYou slipped out hours ago, Polina. Have you been exercising out here while I slept?”

β€œNot quite. Marusya and I flew our Tiger to a safe dispersal site. Then, we raced back, but you were so cute sleeping, I came out here alone.”

Before they could josh around more, CauΓ£ and Nilda jogged over to the arena, and he inspected it.

β€œGood pitch. Right size too. Intended?”

β€œIt was our K9 training area,” said Polina. β€œUntil Dmytro suggested placing the obstacles outside to create an outer ring. A step towards a real sports complex.”

Nilda raised her hand, translating for CauΓ£.

β€œYou’ll quickly learn what he understands,” said Dmytro. β€œFootball is our common lingo.”

CauΓ£ grinned, holding up his thumb.

β€œNow I must see what your star can do.”

Polina stood and, using just one crutch, dribbled one ball accurately through a line of cones.

β€œExcellent. Only one crutch, not two. Skillful.”

β€œThat’s my Polina. Sad her bicycle kick needs her prosthesis.”

β€œNot anymore. Ball, please.”

She let Dmytro flick it to her, dropped the crutch, and leapt backwards into the air using her normal leg to strike the ball with force and precision.

CauΓ£ and the others were amazed.

β€œA Brazilian skill. Fearless and agile,” said CauΓ£. β€œBut how?”

β€œSecret training and a few falls,” said Polina.

*

β€œOur coach believes in you,” said Dmytro, as they lay in the arena looking at the night sky. β€œI want you here, my treasure. Naked, blessing this ground.”

Polina slid out of everything and onto his waiting body.

β€œQuieter this time,” she moaned. Or the dogs will hear us.”

Thursday, May 8th –  Sanctuary, Chayka Field, Volyn Oblast, Ukraine

LΓ³rΓ‘nt BΓ‘tori finished making additions to the assessments from Janina Patriksson’s team, then gazed at the captivating woman who had turned his life upside down… in the best way possible. Maybe when today’s priorities were resolved, they could sneak somewhere private, and…

β€œDreaming of possibilities?” asked Janina. β€œTell me more.”

For a moment, LΓ³rΓ‘nt considered his options, but erred towards priorities.

β€œThis building was designed to withstand the loads it would be subjected to as a terminal, but not to endure an aerial attack. We can expand the space safely as you planned. However, I’ve proposed some modifications that require materials not typically used in this type of structure.”

He slid the adjusted assessment across the table to Janina.

β€œBy unusual materials, I presume you mean ones usually found in aircraft manufacture. We may have some here, but short of cannibalising our existing airframes, we’ll have to turn elsewhere.”

β€œOr increase existing load-bearing structures considerably,” replied LΓ³rΓ‘nt. β€œIf you want to sleep on it… I’ll help.”

Dmytro led Polina and his teammates to the stands, where CauΓ£ was waiting with Nilda and their other friends, including Isla Clacher with Kenina.

β€˜Good timing. The Crusaders from Lutsk can win this First League final,” said CauΓ£. β€œDid you arrange our demonstration, Dmytro?”

β€œOf course. After this match, but on another pitch.”

β€œThere are other amputee women here,” added Polina. β€œBoth inspiring and tragic to see… and children too.”

Nilda, now his constant companion, translated for CauΓ£, even though his nods suggested he understood.

β€œToo many innocents,” he replied. β€œThis game makes a better future.”

Everyone agreed. Dmytro knew all the team had an immediate purpose, but making drones wasn’t a future. But as a community with a shared struggle, maybe there was something to build on.

By the final whistle, FK Khrestonostsi, the Crusaders, outplayed the Kharkiv-Dnipro side Nezlamni 3-0, winning the First League.

β€œThey’ll lift the trophy at the Awards Ceremony,” said Dmytro. β€œAfter the Super League match, but first we’ve got to leave for our demonstration.”

He led the team and their supporters to where another side, which intended to join the growing leagues, was showing their skills.

β€œAnother mixed side,” said Polina. β€œWith some talented players, especially that young woman. Makes me nervous.”

β€œWhy?” asked CauΓ£. β€œYour play is assombroso.” He looked to Nilda.

β€œHe means, β€˜amazing’. I agree, since top Portuguese players are assombroso.”

Polina blushed, and Dmytro hugged her.

β€œWhen you finish,” said CauΓ£. β€œProve me right.”

As the other team came off, Dmytro led his team on, and they ran through their moves. Dribbling balls, neat passing patterns, intuitive flicks, swift breaks, feigned shots on goal, and their goalkeeper blocking well-placed balls.

With their allotted time running down, CauΓ£ shouted for their set-piece… four defending and three attacking.

Although rehearsed, the defenders were unsure when Polina would strike or who would make the flick pass. The first run was a feint by Leonid, with Polina dropping her crutch, distracting the defenders, so Dmytro could attempt to score.

Then Dmytro feinted, but Leonid flicked the ball, and Polina dropped the crutch again. While the defenders were confused, she backflipped, and her bicycle kick propelled the ball past the goalkeeper.

Spectators were stunned, then broke into applause as CauΓ£ shouted, ”Ukrainian style. O jogo bonito.”

The entire team was surrounded, especially Polina.

β€œYou know, some referees call that a foul,” said a photographer. β€œNot me, that made an amazing picture.”

β€œImpressive. I’m Taisiya Martynyuk, and my K9 is Tryzub,” said the young blonde woman, whom Polina had been impressed with earlier. β€œCan you do that every time?”

Dmytro, proud of Polina, had to answer.

β€œEvery time now she’s perfected her new approach… without a prosthesis.”

β€œI had to change when I learnt the rules,” said Polina, admiring Tryzub. β€œSame when I lost my leg, I had to adapt to using my prosthesis. One of life’s many challenges.”

β€œSays my girl who learnt to fly a combat helicopter.”

The blonde looked at Polina with amazement, then asked, β€œHasn’t your leg grounded you? Our wounds can… change us.”

Dmytro knew he’d drawn more attention as others listened too. So, he tried to sidetrack.

β€œWe’re all trying to do our bit for the war effort… like building drones.”

Dmytro luckily noticed Isla Clacher and Kenina were now distracting Taisiya.

He led the team back to the main ground, arriving as cheering erupted when Pokrova beat Shakhtar in the Super League, triggering celebrations. Then everyone stood to sing the National Anthem.

As everyone prepared for the Trophy Presentations, Taisiya approached Polina and quietly asked who her unusual team was.

β€œThey were a team from Kyiv, but since signing me, they became part of the base’s family, where my squadron flies from.”

β€œAre you the only amputee there?”

β€œI have a fighter-pilot sister with an arm prosthesis.”

β€œA sister injured with you?” asked Taisiya, voice shaking.

Polina wondered what the reaction meant. But responded, β€œWe’re actually a squadron of women-β€œ

β€œThe Night Witches,” said Dmytro.

CauΓ£ added, β€œOur team needs women with style. Join, please.”

β€œOur K9 squad would welcome you too,” said Isla.

Before Taisiya could answer, an air-raid siren interrupted the peace.

Monday, May 19th –  Arena, Chayka Field, Volyn Oblast, Ukraine

Isla Clacher watched as Kenina sped around the obstacle course outside the football pitch. Her fellow K9 handlers cheered as the German Shepherd cleared the final wall.

Isla’s radio beeped, and she answered, nodding. Moments later, a camouflaged 4×4 swung through the base’s entrance.

The vehicle stopped beside her, and Taisiya Martynyuk climbed out, with Tryzub.

β€œFellow Night Owls and K9 handlers, meet our newest recruit and experienced vet, whom I told you about. She can tell you more.”

Aldona Jagoda came over, comparing the size of her Belgian Malinois, Taika, to Taisiya’s Tryzub.

β€œYours is the largest Shepherd I’ve seen. Is he a VEO? Was he hard to train?”

β€œTryzub is an East European Shepherd, but I didn’t train him initially. He trained me.” Everyone laughed before she added, β€œMy partner and I were near the front rescuing abandoned dogs, when a Russian bombardment destroyed the house we were searching inside. Lyuba was killed instantly…” She paused, closing her eyes.

Isla could see Lyuba had been precious, so she let Taisiya continue when ready.

β€œI was trapped under rubble, but an injured dog crawled to me. Helped me survive until we were pulled out. I lost my leg and my sister, but Tryzub found me. A neighbour said his owner was killed in the fighting. Since then, we’ve healed and trained together.”

Isla guessed they’d be wrong to pry deeper. Instead, she introduced the K9 team.

β€œGreat to meet you all, and over time we’ll learn more,” replied Taisiya. β€œNow, my 4×4 is full of veterinary resources, which I’ll put in whatever you use as a veterinary clinic.”

Monday, May 26th –  Sanctuary, Chayka Field, Volyn Oblast, Ukraine

Dmytro, CauΓ£, and LΓ³rΓ‘nt were studying the new screen on a wall in the Sanctuary’s relaxation area.

β€œDoes this show where every aircraft is?” Dmytro asked Conchita and Marielle. β€œAfter the massive raids over the weekend, we wondered why so few came back here.”

The two Dispersal officers nodded.

β€œPretty much,” said Marielle. β€œEvery craft or flight has a call sign, and most are at our twelve Dispersed locations or here.”

β€œExcept for Golf and Hotel, which are in Kyiv,” said LΓ³rΓ‘nt. β€œWorking or waiting for orders?”

β€œOn medevac duties after the devastation,” replied Conchita. β€œMercifully, Vasy and Kalyna had the system operational before then, as the squadron was all scrambled. So, we had a better idea where everything was.”

β€œThen we could allocate landing locations quicker, with the correct maintainers,” added Marielle. β€œWe’ll need to make a few improvements and additions.”

β€œLike a means for keeping track of your husband,” joked her friend. β€œWhich reminds me, Aaron needs to update me on his drone assignment near the front.”

Dmytro stood and looked to where his colleagues were working. β€œThat also reminds me I ought to ensure that our drone order gets finished today. Not as urgent as the special task a few months ago.”

CauΓ£ winked. β€œWas that the one my guard hurried me away from?”

β€œProbably a Special Forces guy code-named Medler, hinted at an operation to shake Russia.”

β€œMedler? Sounds like Ruslan Medved,” said Conchita. β€œHis sister, Tamila, is a Witch in Blue Flight. After this weekend, Ukraine needs something to hit back.”

β€œAt least our allies have finally agreed we can use long-range missiles,” replied Dmytro. β€œTragic it took the largest Russian attack in three years, and so much destruction and trauma to reach that crucial decision.”

*

LΓ³rΓ‘nt was relieved when Janina came into the Sanctuary with some maintainers. She collapsed onto the couch beside him, exhausted.

β€œMore damaged aircraft?” he asked. β€œFrom the attacks?”

She shook her head.

β€œAlmost none. But keeping some of these birds flying takes a lot of love and attention. Have you been assessing our progress?”

β€œOnce we checked the new flight screens. The extra accommodation areas are working, so we won’t be so cramped upstairs. There are some additional projects we might need to tackle as required.”

β€œOnce this becomes a safe haven for families, we’ll discover more. A creche might happen sooner than when Conchita and Marielle give birth.”

β€œThe gym upgrade has become a priority… now we’ve attracted a football team.”

β€œThat’s been around for longer than you think.”

Some chairs over, Dmytro was reminiscing.

β€œLast June, Polina’s bicycle kick goal won the match between the Tigresses and the Witches at DΔ™blin Sports Stadium.”

The DΔ™blin “School of Eaglets” opened its modern sports facility in May 2021: Photo facebook.com/lawdeblin

β€œWith her prosthesis?” asked CauΓ£. β€œMeaning they have two teams.”

Dmytro shrugged, then smiled as Polina walked across the room with Marusya Dudziarz.

β€œGreat to have you both back.” He embraced Polina and mentioned Cauã’s query.

β€œNot since we left DΔ™blin, but we have kickabouts.”

β€œBut now there’s an arena,” said Marusya. β€œPlus, multiple coaches. Don’t forget Cecilija Lusk played semi-professional in Canada.”

Noticing the footballers, Taisiya came over with Tryzub and, seeing Olha Tkachuk, Polina waved her over.

β€œAlso, Olha has agreed to be the amputee women’s team’s goalie. But I pray future members are already playing”

β€œAmen to that, wouldn’t wish our injuries on anyone,” said Taisiya. β€œNor what Tryzub went through. I’m praying the augmented vet clinic only treats minor mishaps to the K9 squad.”

Saturday, April 12th – Medical Centre, Chayka Field, Volyn Oblast, Ukraine

Γ‰liane Nowicki and Leandra  Silveira lifted Marielle Simonova onto the examination bed.

β€œShe collapsed earlier when she heard that a Ukrainian F-16 pilot was killed overnight, and feared it was Andriy, her husband,” said Γ‰liane.

β€œHer vitals are normal, but I must monitor her thoroughly,” said Doctor Sacha Proulx, after she examined Marielle. β€œHow long has she been unconscious?”

Γ‰liane checked her watch.

β€œAfter she cried out β€˜Andriy’, she was shaking, so I held her. Others tried to reassure her, and she seemed okay. But 25 minutes later, she fainted… at about 1859.”

β€œBarely three minutes before the name of another pilot was released,” said Leandra. β€œBut Marielle remained unconscious, showing no apparent symptoms. It seemed wisest to bring her here, rather than risk CPR.”

Sacha studied the med-centre’s instruments.

β€œI’m hesitant about making a quick diagnosis, but this shows all the signs of vasovagal syncope. Emotional upset led to a sudden drop in blood pressure, causing Marielle to faint. The possible cause could be dehydration, although none of you pilots risk not drinking, now that you have your AIRUS devices. Also, prolonged standing can-β€œ

β€œOr she’s pregnant,” said Γ‰liane. β€œWhich shouldn’t surprise me, given the times we found Andriy and her in bed.”

They all giggled.

β€œDespite my warnings,” said Sacha, grinning. β€œI’ll have to check. I’m guessing the poor pilot wasn’t-β€œ

β€œMy Fedir,” replied Leandra. β€œThankfully not.”

Sacha waited for Marielle to awaken before doing more than monitoring her. Eventually, the Frenchwoman was conscious enough to answer enquiries.

β€œI must have fainted, worried what the 1900 news would report. Now, I feel stupid it wasn’t him… nor Fedir. But I feel for the dead pilot and his family.”

β€œDespite mixed signs you’re pregnant, I’ll run the test.”

Once Marielle discovered she was, everyone congratulated her.

β€œHowever, even if you aren’t prone to vasovagal syncope, I’ll give you this list of symptoms to watch out for,” said Sacha. β€œI’ll also have to ground you and restrict flying during the pregnancy. G-forces will harm the baby.”

β€œI must contact Papa Andriy and give him the good news,” said a jubilant Marielle, hugging everyone.

Sunday, April 13th – Squadron Command Centre, Chayka Field, Volyn Oblast, Ukraine

Marielle Simonova and Conchita GutiΓ©rrez listened as Kalyna spoke to Colonel Maksym Bondarenko at Air Command West. The duty Code Talker, Nauja Tall Gull, was available when anything encrypted was sent via Aenoheso Little Hawk.

β€œAs our Dispersed Operations now cover ten locations,” said Kalyna. β€œVasy and I appointed our two officers on light duties to coordinate the DOs running. Capitana Conchita GutiΓ©rrez will liaise with the Helicopter air and ground crew, while Capitaine Marielle Simonova will interact with the Fixed Wing personnel. We’ll send encrypted details.”

β€œExcellent. Can other squadrons, including Captain Andriy Oliynyk’s of course, use your dispersed areas if they notify your officers in advance?”

β€œNaturally, and our new hangar is equipped to service F-16s now. What news of the cowardly attack on Sumy? Are our medevacs needed?” asked Kalyna.

Russia’s Palm Sunday Massacre – https://cepa.org/article/russias-palm-sunday-massacre/

β€œIt was horrendous. The Russians must have known people would be in Sumy city centre celebrating Palm Sunday, at the start of Holy Week. The first Iskander-M ballistic missile attack was followed minutes later by another, with devastating results-β€œ

β€œTypical Russian ploy… a double tap, they perfected in Syria”, added Marielle. β€œEnsuring those who rush to help are targets too.”

β€œExactly,” replied Maksym. β€œThere are already twenty dead and eighty wounded… all civilians, many on a bus or in cars wrecked by shrapnel. Our medics from the area responded quickly as casualties are expected to rise. We fear there will be other attacks, some in the oblasts across Western Ukraine. Then your helicopters will be needed there.”

β€œThe medevacs are always on standby,” replied Conchita. β€œWith attack copters as support to deal with drones and rockets. Although the increase in Russia’s use of jet-powered drones makes intercepting them tougher.”

Everyone nodded, and Marielle added a crucial observation.

β€œThey’re even a challenge for our fighter jets… and expensive. A single air-to-air missile can cost millions of dollars.”

β€œThat’s why drone research is a growing priority for our defence industry and military,” replied Maksym. β€œYour squadron has already developed some drone capture and interception devices, including the one fired from modified UB-32 pods on Yak-52B Trainers. There’s an ongoing project developing propeller-driven agricultural aircraft carrying infrared-guided air-to-air missiles under their wings. Somewhat slower than your fighters, but another solution.”

Kalyna and Vasy chuckled and slapped palms.

β€œWho remembers the origin of  Chayka Air?”

β€œThe Polikarpov U-2 of the original Night Witches?” asked Maksym.

β€œNot exactly, although the Polikarpov U-2 my grandmother flew in 1944 was slow, and deadly under Witch-power,” replied Kalyna.

β€œOur first planes in Canada were Kaydet biplanes,” continued Vasy. β€œCrop dusters, so my grandaunt was an ag pilot like her husband, and my grandparents kept them flying.”

β€œHave any modern Witches flown a Moravan Z-137 AgroTurbo?” asked Maksym.

β€œUnlikely,” replied Vasy. β€œAll trained on light aircraft, some turboprop-powered, that we could modify… with our Polish allies.”

Monday, April 21st – Night Witch Command Centre, DΔ™blin Air Base, Lublin Voivodeship, Poland

Major Lidka Andrysiak and Captain Natalie Kuzmenko were pleased that their initial plans for testing both the 10A Thunderbolt II β€˜Warthog’ and the Sukhoi Su-25UBM1 β€˜Frogfoot’ were acceptable to their hosts at DΔ™blin.

β€œWe needed to respect the Easter celebrations and refrain from simulated combat,” said Lidka.

β€œEven if the Russians flouted their cynical Easter ceasefire,” added Natalie, annoyed. β€œAfter Zelenskyy accepted it and called Putin’s bluff by suggesting a 30-day extension.”

β€œWhich Putin ignored,” said Capitana Tamya EcheverrΓa. β€œWho doesn’t really want peace now?”

β€œNot our blind President,” replied Lidka. β€œUkraine does, and we must help in every way we can.”

Natalie pointed at the Warthog and Frogfoot through the window, parked outside their hangar.

β€œAfter the Polish team modified the Sukhoi Su-25M1 so fast, we can start tossing glide bombs tomorrow using a low-level approach and steep climb.”

β€œDo you need any multinational witnesses?” asked Tamya’s twin, Killa, looking at her sister and then the Portuguese, French, and QuΓ©bΓ©cois pilots.

Lidka glanced at the waiting group.

β€œMaybe choose one from each country to attend with the Polish contingent.”

β€œWe can ensure a variation in expertise then,” said Commandant RaphaΓ«lle Balode. β€œUntil then, we have flight exercises to prepare and maintenance responsibilities.”

As they broke into work groups, Tamya & Killa EcheverrΓa returned to their conversation in Spanish with the Silveira twins.

β€œWhen we mentioned flying Super Tucanos in Colombia, you implied both of you flew A-29s in the ForΓ§a AΓ©rea Portuguesa. Was that in combat?” asked Killa.

A Colombian Air Force A-29B Super Tucano takes off during exercise Red Flag-Rescue 23-1 at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, AZ. Date: 11 May 2023. Source: 12th Air Force Public Affairs. Author: Tech. Sgt. Rachel Maxwell.

β€œWe both had to be familiarised with them as potential trainers,” replied Leandra. β€œAlthough we’re more proficient with F-16s.”

β€œWe know in 2019 a Ukrainian military delegation visited the Brazilian aerospace giant Embraer’s military division in SΓ£o Paulo and flew the Super Tucano, and since then, Zelenskyy has approached Brazil’s President to obtain the plane for the UAF,” said Tamya. β€œThat seems to have stalled because of Brazil’s neutral stance in this war.”

β€œYet the plane would make an ideal drone killer,” added Nilda. β€œYou wondered if we could obtain a Super Tucano from Portugal?”

β€œExactly. Colombia is too far, even with the contacts we used for our Kfirs,” said Killa. β€œThe USA have maybe six, which, talking to our ex-USAF colleagues, are unobtainable.”

For a moment, the Portuguese sisters looked at each other. Eventually, Nilda spoke.

β€œFAP should be getting a dozen A-29Ns soon. This variation, configured to NATO standards, may be partially assembled in Portugal by OGMA. However, Embraer has a majority stake in OGMA. Whether Brazil would block any attempt to acquire a  Super Tucano via Portugal, or the Embraer production line in the USA, would be worth investigating, given that this war is becoming drone-led.”

β€œMaybe we need to pursue every route, including Chayka Air,” said Tamya.

Suddenly, Lieutenant NoΓ©mi Tamm dashed back into the room, in tears and shouting in French.

β€œLe pape est mort,” and then calmer in Ukrainian, β€œPope Francis died two hours ago in Vatican City.”

Everyone was shocked, even the few non-Catholics. Then sadness and reflection spread, as people shared what they knew of him as a compassionate and humble champion of the poor and disadvantaged, the environment, and peaceful coexistence.

β€œHis death was expected, although not on Easter Monday,” said Noemi. β€œOur Holy Father died only hours after his appearance in St. Peter’s Square,  for  Easter Sunday celebrations.”

β€œHe’s been ill so much this year,” added Tamya. β€œPerhaps Our Lord called him at the end of Holy Week for a reason?”

Gradually, the ground crew came upstairs, having heard of Pope Francis’s death from Warrant Officer Adrienne Laine.

β€œSome of us were blessed to attend the open-air mass our spiritual shepherd held in 2022 at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium,” said Adrienne. β€œOn the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary.”

β€œWe must never forget,” added Lieutenant Tatiana Ojala. β€œPope Francis’ homily addressed the importance of grandparents, although his trip to Canada focused on apologising for our Church’s role in the Canadian Indian residential school system and on reconciliation with the Indigenous peoples.”

As everyone bowed their heads, some Polish friends entered. Among them was Alojzy Ryba and his daughter, DΕΌesika, who walked over to Killa.

Alojzy embraced Killa, then announced.

β€œWe all presumed you heard the sad news, so we came to invite anyone who wishes to attend a special memorial Mass at the Church of Christ the Merciful, to honour Pope Francis.”

Wednesday, April 30th –  Zvenigora Restaurant, Chayka Field, Volyn Oblast, Ukraine

Kalyna & Vasy Chayka sat at the back of the restaurant with Adriana Pavlenko and Nadia Lysenko, trying to decide how to proceed in the light of recent headlines.

β€œBefore Zelenskyy went to South Africa to meet President Cyril Ramaphosa last Wednesday, Trump had paused military aid, denounced Zelenskyy as a β€˜dictator’, and accused Ukraine of being responsible for the war,” said Adriana. β€œHave we reached a turning point in the peace negotiations? Or will Trump backtrack again?”

The others shrugged, but then Vasy replied.

β€œMoments before Saturday’s funeral of Pope Francis, the mood changed at the meetings in St. Peter’s Basilica. Why? Some say the presence of the other European leaders. Others believe the Pope’s spirit ensured his calls for dialogue were heeded. We need to pray that all guides work to bring peace.”

Trump and Zelensky speak with French President Macron and UK PM Starmer (ANSA)

This time, the others nodded, and Kalyna spoke.

β€œTrump has now admitted twice that Putin β€˜could be tapping me along a little bit’, but he still believes Putin wants to end the war. Yet, Trump still expects concessions from Ukraine. I fear this war will continue until Putin gets what he set out to achieve ten years ago.”

β€œThe US administration is ready to pull out as β€˜mediators’ if there is no progress soon,” said Nadia. β€œIf there’s any way we can ensure genuine negotiations, we must pursue all avenues. Trump will still want to benefit at Ukraine’s expense. Didn’t he press Zelenskyy to sign the U.S.-Ukraine minerals deal as soon as possible?”

β€œThat’s what our reliable sources report,” said Vasy. β€œUkraine needs strong security guarantees from the US and our other allies. Many of us have military contacts with political ties, so we can indirectly influence some decision-makers. That’s our best recourse… as well as continuing to defend Ukraine in the air.”

β€œWe Ukrainians will never give up,” said Adriana. β€œSome of you are forging bonds here.” She pointed to a nearby table, where two expectant couples were celebrating their time together, especially Marielle and Andriy.

All four smiled and glanced at the other Witches in the restaurant.

β€œWill we now see a spate of marriages leading to a pregnancy outbreak?” asked Vasy, chuckling. β€œSeriously, I feel we may need a creche on this level. Families would be safer here, underground. Maybe, there’s even a role for some menfolk.”

β€œWhere do we start?” queried Adriana, just as Nadia got up and joined Aleks GΓ³rski to greet their Polish partners, Brajan Rudawski and Igor Dubicki, who had appeared at the restaurant’s entrance.

Freedom Flights: Episode 44. Trying Times. Part 2. Prenotion.

Episode 44 of Freedom Flights is set in April 2025 and will be released in multiple parts, as I create them. Some events foreshadowed in this episode will take a few months to play out, while others may be resolved in the next part.

I will continue trying to foreshadow future incidents without making my characters react as if they know what will happen later in 2025… although they might fear what could happen. Also, I want each episode to tackle just the crucial RL incidents in a specific month, so I hope to reach the present quickly, as well as the character development. I don’t want to be stuck writing about the previous year when the last shot is fired.

Therefore, after a just and lasting peace for Ukraine is reached, I will continue to write more episodes, thus addressing the essential rebuilding. I also intend to finish writing the pre-2022 growth of the  Chayka Family and their aviation business based in Canada, Chayka Air, but that will be posted elsewhere.

We must never forget the brave people fighting for freedom, with too many losing their lives. Let’s pray Western aid and weapons continue to reach Ukraine, despite unexpected interruptions. Assistance must arrive on time to change their fortunes and prepare for the genuine peace that must come soon.

Tuesday, April 8th – Medical Centre, Chayka Field, Volyn Oblast, Ukraine

Sacha Proulx checked her Medical Announcement, hoping she’d phrased it as intended.

Medical Advice

After the successful wedding celebrations last weekend, I wish all four couples a fruitful union. While we welcome the next generation, I remind you to remain fit to fly. It’s risky for military personnel to fly when pregnant, especially at high G-forces. For further information, please approach me.

Doctor Sacha Proulx

She emailed the announcement and printed a copy to post on the noticeboard.

Carrying her helmet, Captain Natalie Kuzmenko followed Major Illya Medved, Commander of Myrhorod Air Base, towards the hangar where the maintainers had finished ensuring the Sukhoi Su-25M1 was ready to be flown to Poland.

β€œMy apologies for the delay,” said Illya. β€œWe had to ensure the Frogfoot was totally airworthy. I’m unwilling to risk the lives of pilots, especially Night Witches. And we won’t clear you for takeoff if the enemy is around.”

β€œYour daughter said you respected the squadron… as did many others. Staying here overnight proved that your base personnel feel that way, too. Other than Tamila, have many Witches been here?”

Illya hesitated, and a darkness darkened his face.

β€œTragically, when a group of their ORLAN 10s conducted a reconnaissance of this base, the enemy targeted the next flight,  four Night Witches. Russian cluster bombs destroyed the MiG-29s of Sergeant Taisia Kovalchuk and Private Halyna Boyka, killing them, and wounding their wing-sister, Lieutenant Olha Tkachuk.” He closed his eyes, remembering. β€œOther Witches, led by Kapitan Adriana Pavlenko, the surviving flight leader, assisted us along with your medics and K-9 units.”

β€œTheir names are commemorated on our tribute wall at Chayka Field,” said Natalie, bowing her head. β€œAlong with the other Witches, who made the ultimate sacrifice. Let’s pray peace comes before the death toll rises much further.”

Illya led Natalie inside a hidden hangar, where they were met by Crew Chief Stepan Marchenko and three other maintainers, who saluted.

β€œThe Sukhoi Su-25M1 is ready for you, Captain. We’ve overhauled and refuelled her for your flight.” He glanced at his team and blushed. β€œSome guys wondered how many flying hours you had, sir? I told them you were a Night Witch, so probably hundreds.”

Natalie grinned as Illya replied.

β€œCaptain Kuzmenko fought in Afghanistan and trained some of our pilots on F-16s, which tells me she’s earned our gratitude.”

The ground crew stared wide-eyed.

Doctor Yevhen Baran joined the group and handed Natalie her AIRUS device hastily.

β€œThanks for letting me examine this. Encouraging to see something designed for women pilots first. I’m sure men will want them too… unless they’re exclusive for Witches.”

Natalie laughed, especially when she noticed the confused faces.

β€œChayka Air obtained these urine collection devices for us before many US squadrons had them.”

As the ground crew moved the Sukhoi Su-25M1 out of the hangar, Stepan and Natalie ran through more flight checks before she made her external inspection.

Illya and Yevhen helped her put on her helmet and ensured her flying suit and AIRUS were ready before she climbed into the cockpit.

With the canopy closed, the system checked, and the engine started, Stepa saluted, which Natalie acknowledged. The tower cleared the Frogfoot for take-off with no Russians around. She climbed quickly and joined the waiting F-16 flight.

Saturday, April 12th – Recreation Centre, Chayka Field, Volyn Oblast, Ukraine

One of the winning posters from the 1950 Marshall Plan intra-European Poster Competition. (From the collection of the George C. Marshall Museum & Library).

The TV documentary on β€˜Rebuilding Post-War Ukraine’ fueled an informed debate among the recently returned helicopter aircrew. Most speculated on the best means to rebuild the country with Western help. Their countries, ranging from Poland to South Korea, had all begun assisting, but the extent varied, depending on their economic situations.

β€œIn the midst of this war, some aid is trickling in,” said Maike Fabian, pilot of the Bundeswehr-supplied Delta Tiger. β€œThe Defence Industry seems to be the principal beneficiary, although our political leaders have been slower to act than private companies.”

Her co-pilot, Adela Klymenko, nodded and added, β€œPresident Zelenskyy has repeatedly called for a β€˜Marshall Plan for Ukraine.’ If we look at what the post-World War Two investment did for West Germany, a similar plan for Ukraine makes sense and must be feasible.”

β€œEspecially if Ukraine’s allies use the frozen Russian funds in Western banks,” said Xenia Ahlberg, pilot of the Griffon. β€œInfrastructure as well as Defence is needed.”

β€œRussia must pay for reconstruction,” added her ex-RCAF colleague, Iryna Forsberg. β€œBut the recovery must be led by Ukraine, with support and observation from the donors.”

As the conversation drifted to other concerns, more aircrew arrived, and other units left to patrol and move to dispersed locations.

Captain Maryna Sobol and Lieutenant Katia Antonov ordered drinks and food for their new flight, while Captain Tamya EcheverrΓa and her twin sister, Lieutenant Killa, found them a table.

β€œHow was your first patrol in Gripen Cs?” Maryna asked the twins when they were all seated.

β€œNot as intense as expected,” replied Tamya, letting Killa add, β€œWe trained in Poland for combat encounters.”

β€œThey’ll come when we’re patrolling nearer Kyiv,” said Katia. β€œAt the moment, we’re not officially flying Gripens in Ukrainian airspace.”

β€œThat will come in time,” said Maryna. β€œFor now, Sweden has agreed for us to be training on their C and D airframes officially. It seems we’re the test squadron, gauging the Gripens’ versatility.”

β€œDoes that mean they’re trying to time releasing the jets here?” asked Killa, prompting her twin to ask, β€œAre they only likely to send us their secondhand Gripen Cs?”

β€œThey’re most likely to send Cs,” replied Katia. β€œBut only when the Swedish Air Force receives their first new-build Gripen E.”

β€œSaab, not the SAF, provided the two Gripen Es and one F two-seater trainer in DΔ™blin,” added Maryna. β€œChayka Air have contacts in Sweden dating back to World War Two.”

The Recreation Centre went dead quiet when the Ukrainian TV news reported on the night’s Russian raids, concluding with yet another tragic announcement.

β€œThe night has also cost another brave Ukrainian F-16 pilot his life during a combat mission against these ongoing attacks. His name will be released only  when his family is informed.”

β€œAndriy,” cried Marielle Simonova. β€œI knew it when I said goodbye.” She clutched her face and started shaking. Then she stopped when her friend, Γ‰liane, threw her arms around her. β€œAm I acting crazy? There are other F-16 pilots, not just Andriy.”

β€œFedir, his friend. He flies them, too,” said Leandra  Silveira, biting her lip as her twin, Nilda, clutched her.

Maryna and Katia came over.

β€œEvery day, we know death is out there. Death is so close in Ukraine. Far nearer if you’re in a trench. Unexpected… as some of us know,” said Maryna. β€œI understand how important mourning can be. I’ve lost loved ones in recent years. But never presume someone has died.”

β€œThey wouldn’t want you to,” added Katia. β€œWe’ll learn more later. Andriy and Fedir are more likely to be alive and will be pleased to see you. Make each day count.”

Tuesday, April 1st – Medical Centre, Chayka Field, Volyn Oblast, Ukraine

Doctor Sacha Proulx wasn’t sure whether Conchita GutiΓ©rrez had serious concerns or realised what date it was. Sacha knew Spain didn’t treat this as a day for jokes, as many did. It might be Poisson d’Avril, or April Fools’ Day, but Sacha must remain professional.

β€œHow long have you been exhausted? Is it affecting your flying?”

β€œFor a week, but not while flying, otherwise I’d have mentioned it sooner.”

β€œAnything else I should know?”

Conchita hesitated before answering.

β€œThe nausea over the weekend might have been from celebrating. So, could tender breasts… from too much fondling. My period is late, but stress has caused that.”

β€œA pregnancy test should resolve your concerns.”

*

β€œCongratulations, Conchita. You’re pregnant.”

The jubilant mother embraced Sacha.

β€œAaron will be pleased and want to celebrate. Although I suspect alcohol is now off for me.”

β€œCorrect. And I’m afraid I must ground you during the first trimester due to the increased risk of miscarriage. But as a helicopter pilot, you should be fine after that. I’ll inform the squadron commanders.”

β€œUnderstood. I’m sure you’re relieved I didn’t stick a paper fish to your back.”

Sacha laughed.

β€œI suspect someone will make me a Poisson d’Avril.”

Friday, April 4th – DΔ™blin Military Air Base, Lublin Voivodeship, Poland

Capitaine Aline Bonheur landed Sierra, the NH90 TTH CaΓ―man, beside a storage hangar, letting her four passengers disembark.

Kalyna & Vasy Chayka led their colleagues inside, where Commandant RaphaΓ«lle Balode greeted them.

β€œWe’ve arranged the equipment from Canada by type, like drones, spares, and medical. That way, you can plan your strategies. We’ve removed anything allotted here, and on Tuesday, Kapitan Mariyka Shevchuk collected what was needed to advance drone research at Chayka Field.” She paused, then added, β€œMariyka left some material for later.”

RaphaΓ«lle led them back outside.

β€œWe have prepared Sierra for whatever needs to get to base,” said Lieutenant Cecilija Lusk. β€œLeaving space for returning passengers.”

β€œExcellent,” said Vasy. β€œStart with our medical supplies and ammunition.”

Walking across the airfield, Major Lidka Andrysiak and Captain Natalie Kuzmenko met them, and Kalyna greeted the Americans.

β€œWe were intrigued when Aliona outlined your plan… as was our UAF supervisor, Colonel Maksym Bondarenko.” She pointed to where two figures were inspecting the Warthog.

β€œA mean-looking machine,” said Master Engineer Anatol Krakarth. β€œMaksym was telling me about its fearsome reputation. Did one of you ladies fly this?”

β€œLidka was our Hog-flying Killer Queen in Afghanistan,” said Natalie proudly. β€œI only flew F-16sβ€””

β€œIn combat,” added Lidka. β€œYou provided crucial close air support to ground forces… my Winged Consort.”

β€œSo, you both fought in Afghanistan,” said Maksym. β€œMany thanks for training some of our pilots on F-16s in 2023. Someday, I’d like to hear how you acquired this A-10A Thunderbolt II, but now, tell us how you plan to prove its value to us.”

β€œAccess to a Sukhoi Su-25 would help,” said Lidka. β€œThat’s what you and the Russians used for close air support, until too many were shot down. Is the A-10 so vulnerable? Comparing the two airframes would be our starting point.”

Maksym nodded and thought the question through for some minutes.

β€œWe don’t have many Sukhoi Su-25s. They’re being modified to launch French-made Hammer glide bombs at Russian targets.” Maksym glanced at the Master Engineer. β€œHowever, some Frogfoots still need repairs and modifications. Anatol informs me that your engineers and his best students could do that.”

β€œWe already refurbish MiG-29s,” added Anatol. β€œWe understand Russian technology, so we’ll adapt.”

β€œIf we’ve an airworthy but unmodified Su-25, have you a pilot to fly it here?” asked Maksym. β€œIt would save time.”

β€œI flew a USAF Frogfoot in adversary training exercises,” said Natalie. β€œOnce I contrived the chance.”

β€œYour forward planning saved me from volunteering,” said Capitaine Dasha Isakova. β€œI’ve only flown one in a simulator—”

β€œAnd the Su-30SM with me,” added Kapitan Nadia Lysenko. β€œBut out of desperation to escape from Russia.”

Natalie and Lidka chuckled.

β€œA tale worth hearing,” said Vasy. β€œI suggest we discuss the details of the Warthog-Frogfoot Trial upstairs.”

*

Once upstairs in the Witches’ office, Lidka projected a list of steps in the Warthog-Frogfoot Trial onto the screen.

β€œSome of these stages are interchangeable,” said Natalie. β€œFor instance, we can start testing the A-10 and making modifications based on conditions along the frontline.”

β€œI know how much damage the Hog can take,” added Lidka. β€œBut I’d like to study anything showing what Frogfoots are facing before they’re downed. Can we replicate that here at DΔ™blin without destroying the Hog?”

β€œOr my partner,” said Natalie, protective arm around Lidka. β€œShe’s precious to me and crucial to the trial.”

β€œAbsolutely,” said Dasha. β€œLove is more precious than airframes. Although we need both. There must be the expertise here to design suitable challenges.”

Everyone nodded, then looked at Anatol.

β€œCertainly, there is the know-how between my department and your maintenance crews.” He glanced at Maksym, who was on his tablet. β€œEspecially if we learn from downed Su-25s.”

When Maksym put the device down, Kalyna asked, β€œDo you have some news?”

β€œMy colleagues have a suitable Su-25, whenever Natalie can collect it. Details are being sent here encrypted, plus the modification specifications. The UAF has gathered information on Frogfoot vulnerabilities and will supply those .”

β€œWhen received, I’ll make arrangements to collect the plane,” replied Natalie. β€œBut first, I need to learn how to escape from enemy territory.”

β€œIn exchange for first learning how a Warthog escaped from USAF territory,” replied Nadia. β€œAfter that, you’ll have heard where the Frogfoot is, so you can come to Ukraine with us.”

Natalie kissed Lidka.

β€œLet’s start in Afghanistan, where we met in 2012 and fell in love,” said Lidka. β€œI’d flown Hogs for six years by then.”

An A-10 Thunderbolt II, assigned to the 74th Fighter Squadron, Moody Air Force Base, GA, returns to mission after receiving fuel from a KC-135 Stratotanker, 340th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron, over the skies of Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, May 8, 2011. β€œI was only posted there for 2012, flying F-16s with the Arizona Air National Guard,” said Natalie. β€œBut we fell for each other immediately and managed to be assigned together to the 162nd Wing training pilots on F-16C and Ds until we left.”

β€œHow long after you were both here training our pilots did you leave?” asked Maksym. β€œWhat caused that?”

β€œPolitics,” replied Lidka. β€œAlthough we resigned from the USAF on February 1st this year, we knew we would once Donald Trump was re-elected last November.”

β€œBecause of Trump’s attitude on military DEI programs?” asked Dasha.

β€œExactly. That was when we conceived our plan,” answered Natalie. β€œBeing aware of the arguments for and against A-10s in Ukraine, plus the losses of Sukhoi Su-25s on both sides. Yet we felt something could be learnt by comparing them side by side. Step one, I learnt how to fly a Frogfoot in DACT.

β€œAfghanistan and Iraq weren’t similar to the war over here,” said Lidka. β€œStep two was harder… persuading the USAF to allow an A-10 to escape the Boneyard, for a comparison on NATO territory with a Su-25. Fortunately, the arrangements were finalised before Trump’s executive order targeting military DEI programs.”

β€œSo, when you resigned a few days later, this A-10 was heading for Canada,” said Vasy. β€œAnd you arrived at Cold Lake, having forewarned Chayka Air. Was my niece Aliona involved last year?”

β€œOnly when the Boneyard arrangements were set in titanium. Chayka Air has secure credentials due to your CAF connection,” responded Natalie.

RaphaΓ«lle handed Natalie an unencrypted message, which Tayanita Brave Beaver had decoded.

β€œI must fetch the Sukhoi Su-25 from Myrhorod Air Base, near Poltava.”

β€œWe know it well,” said Dasha. β€œI landed there when Nadia and I escaped from Russia. Fly back to Chayka Field with us in Sierra, and someone can fly you there.”

β€œOnly after we’ve eaten, while Nadia tells her tale,” said Natalie.

Freedom Flights: Episode 43. Disarming Attachments. Part 3.

This final part of Episode 43 of Freedom Flights is set in March 2025. I released it in three parts, which I hope proves easier to absorb. World-shattering events may occur in future episodes. Some events foreshadowed in Parts 1, 2  3 of this triple-episode may take a few months to play out, while others may be resolved in Episode 44.

As the flights returned from the night’s sorties, Kalyna and Vasy sat in Control anxiously counting them back.

β€œHow many are still missing?” asked Vasy, watching the dawn light spread across the airfield.

β€œToo early to say. Also, some may have landed elsewhere, so they’ll let us know,” replied Kalyna. β€œThis was another heavy Russian attack… 86 drones overnight. Let’s pray the strategic consignment from Cold Lake produces an effective response.”

β€œEspecially since the attacks are growing in intensity and more widespread. We can’t cope with more losses, yet it seems inevitable.”

β€œBut not before tomorrow’s celebrations.”

Friday, March 28th  – Saint Peter & Paul Cathedral, Kafedralna Street, Lutsk, Volyn Oblast, Ukraine

St. Peter and Paul Cathedral, Lutsk 2008: kotykS

The four couples, the brides with fresh flowers in their hair, gathered near the altar for the crucial stage of the marriage ceremony: the exchange of vows.

The Catholic and Orthodox Bishops had agreed on a format with the couples. Although Conchita GutiΓ©rrez & Aaron Garcia were both Catholic, they embraced Ukrainian traditions happily and were the first couple to make their vows.

Conchita stepped onto an embroidered red cloth, followed by Aaron. Both received candles, and the Catholic Bishop joined their right hands after some prayers.

He then recited, “O’ Sovereign Lord, stretch forth Your hand from Your holy dwelling place and join together Your servant, Aaron, and Your handmaiden, Conchita, for by You is a wife joined to her husband. Join them together in oneness of mind; crown them with wedlock into one flesh; grant to them the fruit of the womb and the gain of well-favoured children.”

Then, Adelita Palomo crowned the couple, as the Bishop said, β€œThe servant of God is crowned for the handmaiden of God in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Conchita, Aaron, Adelita, and the Bishop circled the altar three times, the crowns being exchanged by the couple on each circuit.

The Orthodox Bishop then conducted a similar ceremony uniting Ruslan Medved & Albina Koval, with Tamila Medved crowning them. Then, the Catholic Bishop united Marielle Simonova & Andriy Oliynyk, with Fedir Kravets crowning them, before Dasha Isakova & Mykhail Moroz were married by the Orthodox Prelate and crowned by Polina Moroz.

Prayers, readings, and hymns brought the ceremony to a fitting climax in the Classicist-style building.

Outside, by agreement, the brides tossed numerous good luck nosegays to the guests and traditional bouquets.

As the guests mingled with each other, some were unfamiliar with Ukrainian wedding customs, so they inquired.

β€œThe fabric the couple stepped onto for their vows, does it mean anything, especially as all four brides stepped on first?” asked Henrika Visser. β€œPresumably, the crowns are also symbolic.”

With plenty of Ukrainians among the guests, she was quickly answered.

β€œThe β€˜rushnyk’ is symbolic of prosperity,” said Marusya Dudziarz, β€œand not having to face poverty by β€˜standing on the bare floor’. The person who steps on the rushnyk first has the final say in married life. Most grooms let their bride become the head of the family.”

β€œCrowns are placed on both their heads to symbolise becoming rulers of their new β€˜kingdom’. Traditionally, there are other elements involving home and family,” added Anzhela Havrylyuk, clutching a bouquet and her partner, Larisa Kovalyov. β€œI’m sure the reception back at base will involve more traditions.”

Zvenigora Restaurant, Chayka Field, Volyn Oblast, Ukraine

As the Base Commanders, Kalyna and Vasy Chayka received the wedding guests at the reception in the Zvenigora. Today, they were stand-in parents as few families could make the event during the war.

One of the few, Illya Medved, had been able to fly in from Myrhorod Air Base, bringing Lukyan Petrenko, leader of the unit Ruslan Medved and Albina Koval served with.

β€œI’m honoured to witness the union of two of our finest soldiers,” said Lukyan, waving the couple over. β€œEspecially for  Albina, whose parents were killed in 2022, leaving the unit as her only family… until today.”

Illya smiled, then embraced the couple and his daughter Tamila.

β€œMay I make the first toast, please?” When the group all nodded, Illya faced everyone, raising his voice. β€œPlease drink to four brave couples, including my new daughter, Albina and my son, Ruslan. May they have a blessed life. Never forget all our valiant fighters, like my daughter Tamila and the Night Witches. Hirko.”

All eight newlyweds kissed as everyone drank.

Polina Moroz made the next toast.

β€œOn behalf of my sisters, I thank all the gallant warriors on the ground, like my brother Mykhail. Wish him, my new sister Dasha, and the other fearless couples, a fruitful union with a rich legacy. Hirko.”

Again, the couples kissed, and more drinks were downed.

Before someone else proposed a toast, Dasha moved beside Nadia Lysenko.

β€œYou caught a bouquet. Can we look forward to your wedding?”

β€œOf course… once I persuade Brajan. Now, enjoy today… and tonight with Mykhail.”

More toasts, more kissing, more drinking.

After refilling glasses, Mariyka Shevchuk and Sergei Kovalyov disappeared, returning with a large five-tiered Ukrainian wedding cake. They placed it on an embroidered tablecloth, raised above the other delicacies already being devoured, and beside the Western-style cake.

Korovai and Western wedding cake sat side by side at my cousin’s wedding reception. By: Oksana & Max St John. https://drinkteatravel.com/traditions-ukrainian-wedding/

All the Ukrainians knew what this special cake was, but a few guests were mystified.

β€œExquisite decorations, but what is it?” asked  Jeong Chae-Yeong.

β€œKorovai,” replied her co-pilot, Raisa Vezzoso. β€œIntricately woven bread made of milk, sugar, flour, butter, eggs, vanilla, plus in this one, rum extract. As few family members were available, some of the squadron, as the community, made it this week, to bless the four marriages.”

β€œIn Russia, we have a similar tradition,” added Sergei, letting Mariyka continue. β€œThe dough decorations are symbolic. The two birds, here eight, represent the four couples, and the other birds represent family and friends. Periwinkles, a symbol of love and purity, encircle the Korovai, which was blessed before we baked it. The top four tiers are for the couples and their immediate families. But the rest of us will share the pidoshva, the lower tier.”

First though, the four couples approached and cut the other cake. As that was distributed, Jane Wetherby made a toast.

β€œNone of us, least of all Conchita, thought Aaron Garcia could be brought to heel. But it’s happened, though it won’t stop him from writing. I wish them both a productive life, and the very same hope for the other three couples. Hirko.”

As everyone drank and the newlyweds kissed again, the folk band played, and guests began dancing.

Jacinta hugged her brother.

β€œGuess I no longer need to cover for you. That’s Conchita’s privilege.”

Carita ForsstrΓΆm turned to Conchita.

β€œWhen he’s on assignment, we’ll aim to be there, so he behaves.”

β€œOr beware the wrath of two rotary-wing pilots,” said Adelita Palomo.

By the entrance, Marielle Simonova and Andriy Oliynyk were talking about current deployments with Kalyna, Vasy, and Γ‰liane Nowicki.

β€œHas it been a quiet day so far?” asked Γ‰liane. β€œMost of the squadron seems to be here.”

β€œExcept for the ground crew and security,” replied Kalyna. β€œPlus, the six fighters that just returned, the flight that left, and the one on standby.”

β€œBut a Ukrainian wedding reception lasts days,” added Vasy. β€œEveryone will get to celebrate and fly… when sober.”

As another toast was made, Fedir Kravets appeared with Nilda Silveira on one arm and her twin, Leandra  Silveira, on the other.

β€œThat confirms what we thought,” said Marielle. β€œTwo lucky ladies, or one ambitious best man who is clutching a bouquet. But who for?”

Before Fedir could respond, Adriana Pavlenko and her flight sisters joined the celebrations.

β€œIn true Slavic style, this wedding reception should last for days.”

β€œAs it should,” said Estera SΓ³wka. β€œIt does in Poland. Can some of the off-duty Night Owls please relax here?”

β€œOf course,” said Vasy. β€œWithout security and others, we wouldn’t be secure. Tell anyone else who’s off duty to come.”

Estera and Aitana Salcedo slipped in, followed by Katiuska MelΓ©ndez with Treka, her red & white Siberian Husky.

When Estera returned with two plates of food, Vasy stared for a second, then grinned.

β€œOf course. You and AslΓΆg are minding the MSHORAD system together. Wish your lady good appetite and health.”

More toasts with Hirko echoed across the restaurant, and Aitana whispered to Katiuska.

β€œWhat does Hirko mean?”

β€œBitter,” said Andriy from nearby after he smooched Marielle. β€œIf something is ‘bitter,’ kissing will sweeten it, so the bride & groom must kiss. But we’re sneaking off to enjoy much more in private.”

Monday, March 31st – DΔ™blin Military Air Base, Lublin Voivodeship, Poland

Night crept in, and the runway lights switched on when the request to land came from the expected flight.

β€œDΔ™blin Tower. Chayka One-Eight-Six-Two-Quebec is six miles south for landing with information Echo. Request full stop.”

Commandant RaphaΓ«lle Balode and Captain Lyana Rudenko climbed down from the control tower to meet the Canadian plane.

β€œThat’s their Hercules,” said Lyana, peering across the tarmac. β€œHope they’re not expecting a fast turnaround.”

β€œAliona implied the crew of five were staying overnight to assist,” said RaphaΓ«lle. β€œThat implies substantial hardware.” She pointed to the distant horizon, where the plane had appeared. β€œYou’re correct, it’s Chayka Air’s C-130.”

The plane was directed towards a storage hangar, which some ground crew opened.

Once the Hercules was positioned for unloading,  the rear ramp was opened.

One of the pilots climbed down and approached RaphaΓ«lle and Lyana, who introduced themselves.

β€œI’m Captain Natalie Kuzmenko,” said the pilot, clearly American by her accent. β€œMy colleague, Major Lidka Andrysiak, is following in the second plane.”

A distinctive buzzsaw sound heralded the arrival of an unexpected jet… a Warthog. The A-10A Thunderbolt II landed with runway to spare and taxied towards the stunned Witches.

The pilot climbed out, carrying her helmet, and came towards them. Her haircut matched the Warthog’s sound, and she embraced Natalie after introducing herself.

β€œWe didn’t expect Aliona to send two planes,” said RaphaΓ«lle.

β€œLet’s chat in the Zvenigora,” said Lidka. β€œBefore you ask, yes, we were here in 2023 training pilots on the F-16… before we left the USAF.”

Freedom Flights: Episode 43. Disarming Attachments. Part 2.

Episode 43 of Freedom Flights is set in March 2025 and is released in three parts, which I hope proves easier to absorb. World-shattering events may occur in future episodes. Some events foreshadowed in Parts 1, 2  3 of this triple-episode may take a few months to play out, while others may be resolved in Episode 44.

Episode 43. Disarming Attachments. Part 2.

2025

Sunday, March 16th – Environs of DΔ™blin Military Air Base, Lublin Voivodeship, Poland

Capitana Tamya EcheverrΓa and her twin sister Teniente Killa EcheverrΓa landed their IAI Kfir C.12s and taxied towards the students from the Polish Air Force University. Once they alighted from their jets and the maintainers started their post-flight checks, Tamya and Killa approached the group.

β€œThat was an instructive display,” said the University’s senior Fast Jet trainer, Illya Borysov. β€œThat was the first time any of us had seen an IAI Kfir flying… well, except for when you leave or return each day. How do they perform against other airframes in your squadron?”

Killa looked at her sister, then let her answer.

Colombian Air Force Kfirs fly over Colombia during Exercise Relampago VI, July 26, 2021. Relampago VI is a combined Colombian and U.S. exercise taking place in the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) theatre. (U.S. Air Force photo by Senior Airman Duncan C. Bevan)

β€œSo far, we’ve only faced the squadron’s NATO fighters, though we were matched against F-16s in US-organised exercises in Colombia. Overall, these Kfir-12s have proved surprisingly manoeuvrable, mainly in terms of speed and acceleration, especially climbing. But we struggle in lengthy dogfights with a lot of turning, causing energy bleed. The Mirages have similar problems as they too have delta wings.”

Illya invited the students to ask questions, and one girl went first.

β€œIf the Kfir can climb fast, does that allow the pilot to get into position quickly?”

β€œYes, Kfir pilots can target an enemy for a quick attack with that high-speed performance. But we’re vulnerable to later-generation aircraft with superior energy retention and manoeuvrability. We’ve learnt to use our speed to disengage or reposition our Kfirs. Sometimes it can be wiser to climb out of a fight—”

β€œAlthough then we usually launch our countermeasures to deal with the air-to-air missiles pursuing us,” added Tamya. β€œPerhaps we should show you our Kfirs, while our maintainers are still here to answer any specialist questions.”

β€œIt could be useful to observe the contrast with the Aermacchi M-346 Masters you’ve all been flying,” Illya told his students.

While Tamya and Illya led the discussion on the Kfir’s design, one student drew her twin to one side. Killa realised some of the students had brought parents or friends to the display.

β€œI’m DΕΌesika, and this is my tata, Alojzy Ryba, who’s hoping his daughter lives up to his achievements.”

Killa was impressed with DΕΌesika’s command of Spanish, which proved to be a family trait when her father spoke.

β€œDΕΌesika will better me. I was only a Captain before I left the Polish Air Force.”

β€œYou outrank me, like my sister. What planes did you fly? I presume your eagle badge means you flew.”

He nodded as he touched the silver eagle on the upper left of his blue blazer above the pocket.

β€œYes, I flew MiG-21s and 29s. But we want to learn about you…” He glanced towards Tamya. β€œAnd your sister. What brings you here? Did you see much action?  Why did you–”

β€œExcuse tata,” said DΕΌesika. β€œHe always wants to know everything. If you’re not busy later, could we all meet for a meal? This evening perhaps?”

Killa was glad to get out of uniform for an evening out. Although the squadron had eaten as a group in the Zvenigora, this would be different.

β€œDo we wait here?” asked Tamya. β€œDid they say when you discussed the arrangements?”

Before Killa could answer, a waiter led them to the table where their Polish host and hostess were seated with their first guest. Alojzy stood up and pulled a chair out for Killa, letting the waiter help Tamya.

β€œDΕΌesika invited her friend, Jerzy… a fellow student,” Alojzy said, indicating the young man next to his daughter, as a waitress showed Illya over.

β€œI’m pleased everyone could join us. Tata wasn’t sure you all could at short notice.”

β€œPilots always have duties,” said Alojzy. β€œI say that sensing we all will be… and already are at heart.”

While they talked and were brought drinks, they studied the menus and then ordered their food. Once their dishes arrived, the conversation drifted along casually.

But Killa studied Alojzy, wondering whether his interest was purely aviation-led. She hoped not, as he had already stirred her feelings. Looking around the table, she suspected her sister and DΕΌesika were on the same path.

β€œYou were going to tell me all about yourself,” said Alojzy. β€œStarting with what brought you all the way from Colombia. Must have been something or someone extremely persuasive.”

Truth or evasion? Would he believe the weird encounter? Complicated. No.

β€œFreedom and a friend in Ukraine needing help. My sister and I had the training they needed. We’re experienced fighter pilots… like you.”

He smiled and nodded.

β€œDoes that mean experience flying missions against rebels? Or just NATO exercises?”

She hesitated, knowing some operations had been classified, yet eventually reported. Play safe.

β€œBoth NATO training and ground-attack missions during counter-insurgency operations against Colombian terrorists.” She paused to change the focus to him. β€œYou must have flown interesting missions, too?”

He stared into her eyes, trying to disarm her. Not yet.

β€œShy or inquisitive? I’ll answer another unasked question as well. My squadron flew our MiG-29s in the aggressor role for the NATO Tactical Leadership Programme joint training in Spain from 2011 to 2013—”

β€œAnd that’s when you learnt Spanish.”

β€œFrom DΕΌesika’s mother, who sadly died a few years ago.”

β€œI’m so sorry… to remind you both as well.” She had to change the subject and noticed his badge seemed different.

β€œAm I wrong? Have you switched your eagle?”

He chuckled.

β€œVery observant. This was my grandfather’s. He inspired me to join since he was a real war hero. But one who rarely talked about his service.”

Killa did some quick calculations.

β€œHe must have fought in World War II. Throughout?”

Alojzy closed his eyes… remembering.

The monument to the Polish squadrons of the RAF who served in WW2, sited on the North Circular near RAF Northolt in London: Pete Stean – Own work

β€œFrom September 1939, fighting the Nazis and the Soviets flying a PZL P.11, which he took to Romania.” He paused.

β€œEventually, he escaped to England and flew a Hawker Hurricane during the Battle of Britain. The Poles were already experienced and battle-hardened.” Smiling, he opened his eyes, then touched the badge. β€œHe wore this eagle on his uniform along with his  RAF wings. The green laurel wreath in the eagle’s beak signifies he flew at least seven combat flights.”

β€œA brave man. No wonder he inspired you.”

β€œAnd DΕΌesika. I’ll give her this eagle when she graduates later in the year.”

Killa glanced over at DΕΌesika. She and her friend Jerzy were intently involved in Tamya and Illya’s discussion about the best fighters, especially against Russia.

β€œShe’s keen and knowledgeable enough to succeed, especially studying here.”

Alojzy nodded, watching the foursome.

β€œI graduated from here. The School of Eagles trains us well.” He took Killa’s hands, looking at her fervently. β€œHelp prepare my cΓ³reczka, my daughter. Please. And help me improve my Spanish.”

Friday, March 21st – Chayka Field, Volyn Oblast, Ukraine

The flight from DΔ™blin made one pass over the airfield, checking the runway extension.

β€œSoleil to control. Distance seems perfect, I’ll land first. Others will follow in flight order. Over.”

Capitaine Γ‰liane Nowicki brought her Mirage 2000-5F down carefully and well before the end barrier. As the ground crew directed her towards a new hangar built into the ground, the next pilot began her approach.

The F-16 AM made another perfect landing. CapitΓ£ Nilda Silveira followed the directions to the hangar and called her waiting wing-sisters.

β€œValquΓria to Amante and Leoa. Land as designated. Over.”

Tenente Leandra Silveira followed Capitaine Marielle Simonova down and into the camouflaged hangar.

β€œControl to DΔ™blin Flight. Welcome to Chayka Field, now open for Mirages & F-16s… but not enemy craft. Over & out.”

Marielle sat down beside her wing-sisters, grinning.

β€œYou talked to your man?” asked Γ‰liane.

β€œNot exactly. Kalyna sent a crypted message to all F-16 squadrons, including Andriy’s, saying they were welcome. He’ll be here soon, I know.”

Nilda and Leandra chuckled.

β€œGuess it’s serious,” said Nilda. β€œIs Andriy the one?”

β€œShe’s never been this besotted,” replied Γ‰liane. β€œMy guess is that they will last.”

Marielle just grinned knowingly.

As the wing-sisters joked and relaxed, the two Chayka cousins came over.

β€œWhat do you think of the extended runway and the hidden hangar?” asked Vasy. β€œWe aim to deter unwelcome visitors.”

β€œI guess your defences are as concealed as everything else,” said Leandra. β€œFrom the air, the field appears abandoned.”

The cousins laughed.

β€œAs it’s meant to appear,” said Kalyna. β€œMost locals believe it’s primarily a training ground for dogs and horses. Planes are incidental. Beliefs we encourage.”

Polina Moroz rushed up to where Dasha Isakova, Nadia Lysenko, and Aleks GΓ³rski were seated.

β€œHe’s back and coming any day.”

For a second, they looked confused, but they then laughed.

β€œYour brother, Mykhail,” said Dasha, enthusing. β€œWhen and for how long?”

β€œI wasn’t sure when we learnt mid-March that most Ukrainian forces had withdrawn from Kursk, as there were still small pockets of fighting. But today I learnt he’ll be here by Monday… on ten days leave.”

β€œJust enough time,” said Dasha, remembering Kursk. β€œBut not long enough.”

Marielle Simonova was handed a message saying that two F-16 AMs had successfully landed and their pilots were heading to the Recreation Room. Seeing the Portuguese twins at another table, she guessed who it was.

When Andriy Oliynyk arrived, she threw her arms around him, pulling him in for a long kiss. He lifted her and swung her around.

β€œI had to see you as soon as my sorties allowed.”

β€œWhich meant I came too,” added Fedir Kravets. β€œWe noticed two more F-16s in your underground hangar. Who else is here?”

Marielle pointed across the room.

β€œMore trained pilots to spread the load. Our Portuguese recruits flew their own F-16s via Poland.”

Fedir stared at the twins, then smiled and approached them.

Andriy grinned.

β€œNow he’s disarmed by them, can we go somewhere… private, please?”

*

Polina Moroz was waiting by the K9 course for her brother with Dasha Isakova. Only the Douglass sisters, Tetyana and Zoriana, were tackling the assault course with their Dobermans. Borago and Steinarr were impressive, speeding through the obstacles as one.

Distracted by the K9s,  Polina and Dasha were unaware of the figures creeping up on them.

β€œEasily disarmed,” said Mykhail Moroz. β€œLucky we weren’t Russians.”

The Witch pilots turned.

”With others watching, any threat would be run down,” said Dasha. β€œBy these K9s, who know friends from foes.”

Polina hugged her brother, then let him embrace Dasha, their passionate kiss prolonged.

Eventually, Ruslan Medved, arm around Albina Koval, interrupted.

β€œWe’re all here long enough that you can continue later,” said Ruslan. β€œI’m sure we’re not all bunking together. I’m sure Dasha’s bed is yours too, Mykhail.”

*

Conchita guessed  Aaron was planning something. Their dinner for two at the Zvenigora felt contrived. But he gave nothing away for most of the meal. Until coffee arrived with an envelope, which Aaron opened and read its contents.

β€œFantastic, Chia. We planned to get married a while ago, so I’ve made the arrangements. Midday on Friday, at the Saint Peter & Paul Cathedral, in Lutsk. The main catholic church in the Diocese and the Bishop has agreed to officiate. It’s just 30 minutes away with no flying duties.”

Conchita looked amazed.

β€œSo soon our families won’t be there. But with this war, anything can happen. Friday will be fantastic.” She licked her lips and added, β€œI hope we aren’t interrupted tonight.”

*

Conchita and Aaron’s news began spreading around the squadron, gradually triggering wedding plans for others as well… once they heard.

*

Some were busy, like Andriy, gently savouring every part of Marielle’s exquisite naked body. Her moans of pleasure rose and fell until hours later, when they lay back sated.

β€œMany thanks, chΓ©ri, we needed that,” said Marielle. After a while, she asked, β€œWill Fedir be expecting us back?”

Andriy chuckled. β€œUnlikely with those stunning twins, and Fedir’s disarming approach. But which one has he chosen? More likely both.”

After a while, Andriy rolled closer to Marielle. β€œI’m aware of the risks we take every sortie… and I want to be with you forever. Will you marry me… as soon as possible?”

She pulled him on top of her.

β€œOf course. I’ve been desperate for you to ask. How quickly? Before you must leave me again, please.”
